Sidewalk witnesses

This series of four paintings depicts the walnut trees growing along the road to the railway station Obersdorf (Lower Austria). The sky is painted with many layers of strokes in different colours inspired by Van Gogh’s technique. The ornamental and vibrant surface of grass is painted with a reference to Gustav Klimt’s landscapes. The trees are as Austrian in their silhouette and relation to space as those of Egon Schiele.

These paintings tell a story about finding courage and hope in the face of immigration. Each meticulous stroke paints the movement of air that carries the smell of spring. The trees on the sidewalk witness our journey to safety and a better life. They give us protection from the sun and wind. They inspire us with their willingness to live and thrive wherever they are. They offer their branches to the Golden Papagei when he needs to rest. And then he is strong enough to continue his journey.
